In this powerful action study, the Australian Pied Cormorant (Pied Shag) demonstrates the complex mechanics of flight termination. Having swept across the inlet, the bird is captured in the fraction of a second before its feet grip the rugged, salt-crusted rock.

The photograph highlights the impressive scale of its dark, primary wing feathers and the beautiful contrast of its white underparts, which glow against the deep, moody blues of the water. Every feather is visible in high definition, illustrating how the bird uses its body as an organic airbrake. This is not just a bird on a rock; it is a document of momentum, gravity, and the effortless precision of a species that is as much at home in the air as it is under the waves.
